And we have a winner.
There haven’t been many movies this year the jumped out at me as fantastic. I loved Buster Scruggs, Roma, First Man, and Blackklansmen, but mostly it has been a down year for movies.
But The Favourite is, well it is my favorite movie of the year, that I have seen. Technically I saw it in 2019, but it is officially a 2018 movie so I will put it on that list. I hadn’t even really heard about it. But I saw it was nominated and that it is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, so I had to see it. If you are unfamiliar with him, he made The Lobster, and The Killing of a Sacred Deer, both fantastic, yet disturbing movies. And this is no different, but I do think it is more accessible than his past films.
It stars Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, and Olivia Coleman, all of whom are nominated for an Oscar. I was not familiar with Olivia Coleman before seeing this movie, but she flat out stole the show, and will hopefully become a familiar face going forward.
It is both hilarious, but also disturbing and so enthralling. I was completely invested in the story. It is loosely based on real history, but with creative choices to make it more interesting. It follows the ill Queen Anne, as two people who work for her struggle to earn her favor. A simple base for a story, but it is anything but simple. I don’t want to spoil so I will not say anything more.
There are very few flaws. It is beautifully shot, has a good score, amazing production design, costume design, everything is great. My only complaint, and it is minor, is there are couple very weird shots that use a fisheye lens. I suppose it was an artistic choice, but it is a bit distracting. Beyond that, I loved it. It is my favorite Yorgos movie to date.
