Film Editing
5. Bohemian Rhapsody
Yea, this film being nominated here is an absolute joke. Just count how many cuts there are in this one clip.
It can’t stay on one shot for more than a second. It feels like it was cut by a high school band putting together their first music video. Laughable. Academy does not pay attention to these awards. They may even let this win, because they do not know better.
4. Vice
What great editing was in this movie? If anything it was over edited. Not as badly as Bohemian Rhapsody is, but bad enough it shouldn’t be nominated. Somehow this is considered a front runner. I mean they gave it to Hacksaw Ridge a few years ago, so I am pretty convinced they just do not know what they are doing.
3.Green Book
Again, I just do not get it. Why does the Academy love this movie so much, and what makes the editing special?
2.BlackKklansmen
Ok, sure, this movie actually had some good editing. If the Favourite can’t win, then this should. You can tell a lot of forethought went into ow the movie was both presented and edited. Spike Lee went into the editing room most likely knowing what he was going to do. The editing had style and would be used to accent the comedy, something not enough comedies do.
1.The Favourite
Yea, this should win. It won’t but it should. There are so many great things in this movie, and the way the sequence of events was presented is one of them. It is done to let the twists and turns of the story have a maximum effect. I love it so much and am worried it won’t get enough credit on Oscars night. And like BlackKklansmen, they used clever editing tricks to accent the comedy. Seeing directors actually use all the tools in their chest to drive the humor is a relief since not enough do it.

Bandersnatch
This would never get nominated, but it was edited in a very experimental way, to great effect.
What Should Win
The Favourite
What Will Win
The Favourite

Sound Editing
5. Bohemian Rhapsody
Again, why?
4. Black Panther
There was nothing special about the way the audio was edited or presented in this movie.
3. A Quiet Place
While I did not buy into the hype of this movie, it did take special care with how the audio was captured and presented, with each character having the audio presented differently, and from their perspective when the camera is focused on them. Most notable when focused on the deaf character.
2. Roma
Watch this movie with surround sound, and you will get how great the sound is here.
1. First Man
No movie used sound to create a bigger impact than First Man, it deserves this.

Spider-Man and Misson Impossible
Both used sound very effectively, but animated movies rarely if ever get credit for anything outside the animated categories. Surprised MI: Fallout got no love though.
What Should Win
First Man
What Will Win
A Quiet Place

Sound Mixing
5. Bohemian Rhapsody
Again, why?
4. Black Panther
Again, nothing special.
3. A Star is Born
This was actually one area where A Star is Born was impressive. They paid extra attention to how the sound was presented, and it certainly deserves this nomination.
2. Roma
Again, listen to it in surround sound, so effective.
1.First Man
Again, Sound is amazing in this movie.

Visual Effects
5.Ready Player One
The effects felt kind of fake in this movie. I mean I don’t want to say they were bad, but they were bad. Nothing looked believable. Its like they couldn’t decide if they wanted things to look real, or to look like a video game, and got stuck in the middle.
4. Solo
Effects were not that special. Good, not great. Just standard Star Wars stuff.
3.Christopher Robin
Sure, I guess so. The animated characters did look surprisingly good next to the live action characters.
2.First Man
The effects are subtle, much more subtle than one would think in a movie like this, but effective.
1.Avengers Infinity War
The effects are genuinely great, whether it is the CGI characters or the fights, there is so much going on and it all looks great.
Snubbed
Eh, while I did not like Ready Player One’s effects, not sure what to replace it with.
What Should Win
Avengers
What Will Win
Avengers
Cinematography
N/A- Never Look Away
Haven’t seen it.
4. A Star is Born
The cinematography was fine, nothing special.
3. Cold War
Was a good movie, too short, but that has nothing to do with cinematography. Just not as good as the other two.Still fairly exceptional
1a. The Favourite
I can’t differentiate between these two. Both are so exceptional.
1b. Roma
Amazing, and also in black and white, which seems to give movies a boost in this.
Snubbed
So many things could have been here over A Star is Born. Sisters Brothers, First Reformed, Beale Street, Widows, hell, even Spider-Man, though I am not sure if animated movies are eligible, though they should be.
What Should Win
Either The Favourite or Roma
What Will Win
Roma, Black and White breaks the tie.
