The Academy’s choices for Best Picture were…. bad.
Whereas last year it felt like they got 7 of the 9 picks right, this year, it feels more like 2, maybe 3 picks were right. Bohemian Rhapsody, Vice, and Green Book, have absolutely no place among those nominations, and while I get why Black Panther is there, it probably doesn’t deserve to be based on quality. Also, A Star is Born is okay, but not a Best Picture worthy film. The Favourite and Roma definitely deserve the nom and are actually probably the two best films, so they at least got that right, and BlackKklansmen was good as well. They also only nominated 8 for some reason, despite being able to nominate 10 now.
It is not because this was a bad year for Film, just a year the Academy apparently missed. So along with The Favourite, Roma, and BlackKklansmen, here are 7 other movies that deserved a nod, in no particular order.
- The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
- First Man
- If Beale Street Could Talk
- First Reformed
- The Sisters Brothers
To me, these are probably the 10 best movies, that I have seen, of this year. I feel like the Oscars never even saw The Sisters Brothers or Annihilation because despite both being legitimately amazing, both were shut out completely. Widows is shocking for being shutout since it was made by Steve McQueen and stars Viola Davis, tow people with a lot of cred in Hollywood. But instead, they chose to celebrate mediocrity.
